South Iceland - waterfalls, glaciers, volcanos, and beaches

On this type of travels I soon have that intensive feeling that a day counts like a week as for experiences. Today we started at the Skogarfoss, 62 m high waterfall. It was our lucky day, the first waterfall in Iceland we visited on a sunny day and could see the rainbow.

Skogarfoss

Thanks to geocaching we hiked an amazing trail today along the river above Skogarfoss with many smaller but equally impressive falls. We enjoyed the hike and the views a lot.

After the waterfall we went to a nearby glacier called Sólheimajökull. The view of the retreating glacier made me kind of sad. The speed of melting is immense, about 100 m per year. There is a cache placed there in 2013 to remind us of where the glacier still was 2 years ago. Nevertheless, it is still massive and beautiful, makes you love the planet even more. The people just don't care, they take selfies with the glacier and run up and down the restricted area. One boy jumping on the top of the huge pieces of ice on the spot where the glacier ends now nearly fell down when a part collapsed below his feet. A small piece chipped off so I took it with me and it melted before I got to the car park. It looked beautiful, much different from the ice cubes we have in our fridge. It was fresh, perfectly clear and shiny. Another impressive piece of nature were the boulders in the valley left behind the mass of ice. Amazing spot.

The last stop of today was a walk to the sea, where there is a wreck of an airplane. It was extremely windy and we decided to walk instead of driving our car right next to the wreck. Not many people walk, they just drive. The wreckage is impressive too. But it was harder to enjoy in that wind. On our way back 3,5 km one way we were accompanied by a beautiful rainbow all the hour.
It was un unforgettable day in connection with nature through its wonders.
